Isaac del Toro will spearhead UAE Team Emirates’ challenge at the Itzulia Basque Country 2026, which begins tomorrow in Bilbao. The Mexican rider enters the six-stage WorldTour race as one of the top contenders, riding high on confidence after claiming victories at both the UAE Tour and Tirreno-Adriatico earlier this season.
Challenging Route Awaits
The 2026 edition of Itzulia presents a formidable test across 809.6 kilometers and over 16,000 meters of accumulated elevation gain. Starting in Bilbao on April 6, the race will wind through the demanding Basque terrain before concluding in Bergara on April 11. The mountainous parcours is tailor-made for climbers and stage race specialists, making it an ideal hunting ground for del Toro’s aggressive racing style.
Del Toro’s Stellar Season Form
Currently sitting third in the UCI World Ranking, del Toro has established himself as one of cycling’s most consistent performers. His double victory haul in the UAE Tour and Tirreno-Adriatico demonstrates the Mexican’s versatility across different race formats and terrains. The 2025 Itzulia saw del Toro claim a stage victory and finish 15th overall, providing valuable experience of the race’s unique challenges.
UAE Team Emirates will be looking to del Toro to deliver their first Itzulia Basque Country general classification victory, with the team’s strong early-season form suggesting they have the depth to support their leader’s ambitions throughout the demanding six days of racing.
Battle for Basque Glory
The compact nature of the race, combined with its relentless climbing and unpredictable Basque weather, ensures that every stage will be crucial in determining the overall winner. Del Toro’s proven ability to perform under pressure and his excellent current form position him as a serious threat to the established Itzulia hierarchy.
With the peloton set to tackle some of the most beautiful yet brutal roads in professional cycling, fans can expect six days of intense racing as del Toro and his rivals battle for supremacy in one of the sport’s most prestigious week-long events.
